SPSL Member Wins The Archie Kenneth Quaich in EdinburghThose of our site regulars who look at the 'Piping News' panel on the right hand side of the homepage, will, by now, be aware that the Archie Kenneth Quaich competition for amateur piobaireachd, which is organised by the Piobaireachd Society, was won, last Saturday, By Andrew Park. Andrew, formerly resident in Chesham but now living near Hull, is a longstanding SPSL Member and supporter of our events and, in-fact, is the main provider of IT support for this website. His winning tune was 'The Lament For Mary MacLeod' Andrew is also a regular attender at the SPSL's Tuition week-end formerly held at Urchfont Manor, in Wiltshire but, this year, due to the Manor's closure, to be held at Missenden Abbey in Buckinghamshire (as you can see on this site's home page). 'Mary MacLeod' is just one of the tunes that has been taught at the tuition event and was evidently where Andrew first heard the tune. We send our heartiest congratulations to Andrew on his achievement and we look forward to seeing him at our Member's competition on April 13th at the London Welsh Centre. This year six pipers competed for the 'Pipe Band Forum' Trophy, a plinth mounted tenor drone with a silver shield attached to the stock which originally adorned the bagpipe of Pipe Major Lewis Beaton, founder member and first president of the SPSL. The whereabouts of the instrument upon which this shield was originally mounted are unknown but the plaque itself turned up on e-bay a few years ago and the purchaser donated it to the Society. The trophy has become a highly sought after prize. Members succeed in Scotland2012 has opened with several of our members emulating the success of our treasurer, Andrew Hall, last year at the Dunrobin Castle event, by doing very well at the latest CLASP competitions in Edinburgh. Andrew Park won the overall Grade 1 award with 1st in the March and 1st in the Strathspey & Reel. Tom Broderick won the overall Grade 3 award with four first places spread over ceol mor and ceol beag disciplines. Dave Gatcum secured a couple of thirds in Grade 2 and Clive Troubman a third in the Grade 3 Strathspey & Reel. Our congratulations to these prizewinners and we hope that their success continues and that we see more of our members following their example in the ensuing months. Watch this page for imminent announcements about Tuition, Piper's Clubs and the Member's Competition. |
